boats operating on the Birmingham Canal Navigations
boats, barges and flats
Notes: These list the known fate of the boats
*Fleet Numbers: Some of these have been assessed using the
chronological sequence but many were derived from the Birmingham Canal
Navigations gauging registers and others appear on photographs. Entries marked
with an asterisk (*) have been verified. The wide boats were not incorporated
into the chronological fleet numbering sequence.
Builders: The vast
majority of the boats were built at the company’s own yards and principally
that at Tower Wharf, Chester. A few were built elsewhere including ten by
William Nurser & Sons at Braunston between 1911 and 1915 and another four
by Lees & Atkins of Polesworth.
